Fortress Layout
Dense Walls, Deep Strategy — Hard
Play Fortress NowThe Fortress is the most demanding of the five standard layouts. Tiles are packed into a dense walled formation with multiple deep stacking zones. The compact shape means many tiles remain inaccessible until layers above them are systematically cleared. Only experienced players will crack the Fortress on their first attempt.
The Fortress layout represents the pinnacle of challenge in standard Mahjong Solitaire. Its dense, castle-like shape creates dependency chains that can span four or five tiles deep — meaning a single wrong move early can make the board unsolvable many turns later. The satisfaction of clearing a Fortress board is proportionally greater than any other layout.
Strategy Tips for Fortress
-
Identify the Bottlenecks
Scan for the stacks with the most layers — these are your bottlenecks. Plan your entire sequence around clearing them first.
-
No Impulsive Moves
Every move in the Fortress should be deliberate. Removing a pair that felt satisfying can seal off the path to victory.
-
Corner Tiles Last
Corner tiles in the Fortress often have no tiles on top — they're safe to leave until you need them as pair-matches.
-
Undo Freely
The Fortress is designed to punish mistakes. Use Undo liberally to retrace and find the correct sequence.
