Turtle Layout
The Classic Four-Layer Pyramid — Medium
Play Turtle NowThe Turtle is the most iconic Mahjong Solitaire layout — a broad, multi-layered formation that resembles a turtle's shell. Four layers of tiles form a stepped pyramid, with 86 tiles on the base, 40 on the second layer, 14 on the third, and a single cap of 4. Its balanced structure makes it the ideal starting point for new players while still offering meaningful strategic choices.
The Turtle layout has been the face of Mahjong Solitaire since its digital debut in 1981 when Brodie Lockard created the game on a PLATO computer system. The shape mimics the domed shell of a turtle when viewed from above — broad at the base, rising to a narrow peak. Its widespread adoption in software packages throughout the 1980s and 1990s made it the default mental image of Mahjong Solitaire for generations of players.
Strategy Tips for Turtle
-
Work From Top Down
The highest layers have the fewest free tiles early on. Prioritize clearing top-layer tiles first to open up options beneath.
-
Watch for Pairs
Before removing any pair, scan the full board. A pair removed now might block three pairs later — patience wins the Turtle.
-
Edges First
Outer-edge tiles on the base become free faster. Clear them to expose the interior stacks.
-
Save the Shuffle
The Turtle is usually solvable without shuffles. Conserve your shuffle for when you're truly stuck — not just mildly challenged.
